Loops

In a Loop pattern, the ridges will  flow in one side, recurve, (loop
around) touch or pass through an imaginary line drawn from the
delta to the core, and exit the pattern on the same side as it entered.

*A loop pattern has only one delta.
*There are two types of loop patterns:
               1. Ulnar loop
               2. Radial loop
*Loop patterns account for atleast 70% of all fingerprints

Whorls

A whorl pattern consists of a series of almost concentric circles.

     * A whorl pattern has two deltas

*There are four types of whorl patterns:
                1. Plain whorl,
                2. Central Pocket Loop whorl,
                3. Double Loop whorl,
                4. Accidental whorl

*Whorl patterns account for atleast 25% of fingerprints

Arches

In an arch pattern, ridges flow in one side and flow out the
opposite side. There are no deltas in an arch pattern.

*There are two types of arch patterns:
             1. Plain arch,
             2. Tented arch

Arch pattern account for atleast 5% of all fingerprints

Collecting Latent Prints

One of the most common methods for discovering and collecting latent fingerprints is by dusting a smooth or nonporous surface with fingerprint powder (black granular, aluminum flake, black magnetic, etc.). If any prints appear, they are photographed as mentioned above and then lifted from the surface with clear adhesive tape. The lifting tape is then placed on a latent lift card to preserve the print.

Preserving Latent Prints

Latent prints on nonporous evidence are often deposited on the surface of an item and are extremely fragile. Wearing gloves does not protect the latent prints from being destroyed if they are touched, rubbed, or smeared; they only prevent additional prints from being deposited.

Interact with the picture galleries above!

Plastic Prints- visible, impressed prints that occur when a finger touches a soft, malleable surface resulting in an idention

Latent Prints- impressions produced by the ridged skin, known as friction ridges, on human fingers, palms, and soles of the feet

Visible Pronts- blood, dirt, ink or grease on the finger come into contact with a smooth surface and leave a friction ridge impression that is visible without development
